I love making a healthy versions of my favourite cocktails, or even just creating and trying super sexy bespoke mine! Here are some fabulous way to make your cocktails trendy, healthy-er and less prone to leave you with a hangover.
1) Make your “mixer” medicinal.
High sugar fruit juices and sweetened mixer options work with the alcohol and gear you up for a dyer head and tummy upset. Lets try and be a bit smarter with our mixer options, and I’m not saying jump for soda water, because there are other, tastier options that you can go for:). (Although, I do end up opting for soda water when the bar doesn’t have any better go-to’s).
What to go for?
Coconut Water – Subtly sweet, highly hydrating and a great source of antioxidants! Harmless Harvest is delicious and pink due to the antioxidants!
Kombucha – Great for your gut bacteria, naturally fizzy
and very tasty! *Best straight mixer Synergy Kombucha
Green Juice – Lower sugar option than a straight fruit juice and the added benefits of calcium, vitamins and antioxidants from the veg – yippee.
Koa Water – Koa is a natural Olakino. Olakino is the healthiest parts squeezed from fruits & veggies. Olakino retains the natural goodness but skips the bad stuff. That means Koa can boast naturally occurring vitamins, minerals,
electrolytes, and anti-oxidants without any additives or calories. A guilt free detox? Some might call that magic, we just call it Koa
Cold Brew – The best mixer for a knock off espresso martini – and you can really jazz it up, click through here for our Superfood Cocktail recipes, get excited ;). Chameleon Cold Brew.
2) Spice it up with herbs
Although mixing straight with the options above are palatable and good slow-sippers if you want to pace yourself, there’s no reason why you can’t make your cocktail tantalisingly tasty…use these herbs, extracts and healthy-er sweetener options to go ll out!
Mint – Mint has such a distinctive taste, some say you either love it or you hate it, but I think that it goes great with vodka ;)…. It’s also a lovely tummy soother, so a good option to be adding if you’re drinking alcohol.
Ginger – Ginger makes a fabulous infusion quickly and adds a warming spicy sensation to your alcoholic bev – it also goes well with pretty much all of the mixers suggested above. If you know how, it would also make a great cheeky syrup made with Agave or honey.
Agave / Honey – Honey and Agave have higher percentages of fruit sugars which are better for us than sucrose which promotes a higher insulin secretion. Honey and Agave also contain some lovely herbal health benefits that standard cane sugar does not!
Cinnamon & Turmeric – Again, you know if you like it, but cinnamon is a great spice that can be combined with Turmeric for added remedial benefits. It’s warming, sweet and has a distinct flavour that goes great with cold brew *hint.
Lemon – Simply said
Sage, lavender & Rosemary – OMG tasty with gin or vodka – beautifully aromatic with calming nerve effects for a great friday unwind cocktail.
3) Making it creamy
If you’re wanting to make a creamy frozen Colada cocktail or alike then here are some great go to’s instead of sweetened coconut cream, ice cream or milk.
Coconut Milk – Rich in fibre and Vitamin C and magnesium, Coconut milk, full or low fat is a fabulous source of vitamins for vitality and immunity. Try and buy one with no added Guar Gum – the Natural Value Coconut Milk is a good option.
Almond Milk – Even better homemade or very pure and creamy, almond milk is the perfect tasty and nutritious dairy milk alternative. High in Calcium and Vitamin E for kind skin nurturing. I use Califia Farms Almond Milk if I don’t have any homemade.
Booja Booja / Vegan Ice Cream – YOU have never tasted anything as good and healthy as Booja Booja ice cream. I know junk food lovers who have converted to this raw/vegan ice cream with no looking back. Made with a base of cashew nut milk and sweetened with dates, they come in some beautiful flavours and make the perfect ice cream topper or creamy blending option. I am yet to find a great brand in the US other than when I buy from independent stores…

Very interesting, those are some great suggestions. I’ve never thought of using kombucha as a mixer but now I’m inspired to try some with some lavendar and vodka – yum!
